Yule Recommendations
Feb. 15th, 2012 08:40 pmEvery year I lurk around waiting like an impatient goober to see what The Yuletide obscure fanfic gift exchange produces. I dig through random fandoms, some of which I barely know, just to see what goodies appear this year.
This year, I'm also sharing some of the ones I liked the best.
Wine and Water retells the myth of Ariadne and Dionysus.
Gods versus Aliens is one of the most cracktastic Greek myth abuses I've ever read, and I love it. Aliens decide to invade ancient Greece just as the Trojan War is starting, and it gets zanier from there.
A Spring with No Winter is my favorite Persephone and Hades fic of this year. I'm not sure why this particular myth has such a fanbase, and so many repeat requests, but this one has a lovely flavor of fate and power and choice to it.
The Woosteriad is somehow Jeeves & Wooster meets The Illiad meets some other things I've never run across in The Future! In Space!- and is not only NOT incomprehensible, but is a hoot and a half.
What You Wish For and What You Keep was a nice, sweet Cinderella story smashed together with lots of other Disney franchise material, and made me go "d'aww!" a lot. Warm fuzzies!
Always Winter was one of my favorite two stories this year. In it, Tintin meets The Chronicles of Narnia, and it just. WORKS. It resonated with me as lovely and sweet and true, and so... yeah. Totally reccing this one.
I have to see a man about a god is the other kickass story this year, wherein the Greek pantheon is a crazed, dysfunctional family in 1920's... as in, members of The Family during Prohibition. Seriously? Greek gods as mafia types with flappers and - oh, just go read it! It's a bit long, but period urban fantasy (steampunk fantasy?) of the best kind!
Also, Tiger and Bunny had several selections, and while none of them really really jumped out at me as awesome, I liked all of them, so I'm also linking that too.
