Testing other waters
Jan. 13th, 2009 06:46 pmSo it turns out City of Heroes has a trial version - only a few days old for the mac.
...not a fan. First off, I don't want to wait over a minute to get my game. What the hell. The lag - not IN game, like trying to walk across Lagforge (doable but not pleasant), but to deal with the game such as entering an instance (again, at least a minute), SUCKS.
Other gripes? The graphics also leave me very disappointed. It's sad, that the prettiness involved - and the lack thereof - is a major element to the call of "meh". Little attempt to have background music is boring - though I'm willing to give that it might be an element of not exploring much. The lack of inventory makes sense given the genre, but I find myself liking the packrat approach, and perhaps I've spent too much time farming, since I miss juggling inventory. That, or I'm rooted a little bit too strongly in D&D, where I recall it also being prevalent. I just can't seem to get behind the clunky interface options, and being on a MacBook makes all of this that much more ridicilous. City of Heroes, you're apparently not for me. I'm going back to my WoW. I think I can see why some folks dig you, but it ain't my thing.
City of Villains, however, needs to die. I couldn't even make it out of the tutorial, due to the annoying "Prisoner escape!" alarm going in the background the entire time, never mind the annoying music they play during character creation. Seriously. What lunatic designs starting areas to a game to be as @!#$%^ annoying as possible?!!? The funny thing to all this? I almost NEVER turn on sound when playing anything.
So that means that BrambleBee* will probably never do anything, though in my remaining few days of trial The Neon Dryad may venture beyond level 1. Maybe.
* The villain's description** reading "Born from an unfortunate encounter between a nature spirit and Termite Lad (sidekick of the Arboreal Avenger), it's not too surprising that this being just hates everything." She's a murky green, and kinda leafy, and wears black and dark yellow gear while wielding two funky swords. I liked the result, at least....
** The people at work sometimes wonder why I giggle to myself the way I do. I'm odd? I at least had fun with naming and character background.
