War Maid's Choice

...I have no idea if I should be excited about this (as in bouncing off the walls gleeful) or hiding in a corner from more madness concerning the Sothoii. Eh, I'll be waiting for paperback anyways, but still.

....DoJ is now more canon to me than canon - yikes and squee! Anyone else have this "problem"?

It was a good book! Though I continue to be grumpy that Brandark's "specialness" as revealed by the gods hasn't yet had any explication. -_-

After skimming the first few chapters, I'm more on the side of looking forward to it. :) Here's hoping the rest of the book lives up to the first chapters!!!

....I've theories about Brandark. Just little things, but I don't know how good I am at figuring out where Weber is going with his stuff.

It's definitely beginning to expand into the modern Weber model of storytelling (lots of different viewpoints, all very involved in world-building/technological/social details). Which doesn't bother me, but it does give me moments where I have to doublecheck if I'm reading this or Honor Harrington.

I'm both happy and horrified. Happy, because yay Bahzell and Brandark! :D and horrified, because augh war maids we will have more of the Leather Fanboy Outfits being described as 'practical'. :P

Yes. Oh, yes. Methinks Wufei's opinion is going to be a tad... blunt. ;3

Ooooh! I can't wait. I'll bet that'll be hilarious fun!

So do I. >:3 The precise details of how blunt he's going to be depend entirely on how the senior War Maids behave. ;)

I can't help picturing leather outfits a la Xena, for that matter.

Which were not that practical, either. XD

Maybe not, but they looked awesome. *shrug*

From: [identity profile] mel-redcap.livejournal.com
Which was of course the point. XD At least Xena and Callisto didn't go into lectures about how wearing teeny leather bustiers in an area that gets blizzards in winter and isn't that warm in summer is practical for ANYTHING, let alone fighting in. ;D

(Besides, Xena can pop a dagger tucked in her cleavage out of its sheath and fire it several feet into the air by inhaling. I think her muscles are strong enough to count as armour all by themselves. *snicker*)

Well, duh. I always assumed it was more for freedom of movement than anything. After all, her fighting style might as well have been choreographed ballet or something, the way she moved.

(And, yes, being able to pop a dagger out of your cleavage by inhaling wins. But I still think it was spring-loaded.)

From: [identity profile] mel-redcap.livejournal.com
(Well, Xena could pop up the dagger by inhaling, but Lucy Lawless needed a spring. :P :D)

Now you're just nitpicking. :P

Damn you. Now there's a part of me that's trying to convince the rest that it would be hilarious to show up to class (I'm a teaching assistant) in cosplay as Xena. *headdesk*

1. That's what Halloween is FOR. XD
2. If you can pull it off, then I think that's something guaranteed to make it a lesson the students remember.
3. Pics or it didn't happen. ;)

1. Hmm. You make a good point.

2. LOL. True. If I end up teaching again next semester, I'll have to try that.

3. So come take them. :P

( :D Oh man, I still can't quite believe it. *noms*)

*innocent look* I have no idea where you could possibly have gotten such a mistaken impression, given that history proves I'm far more likely to cheer you on. 0:)

....wait, that wasn't rhetorical?

O_o

What the HELL did I miss in my misspent youth -

Oh. Right. I didn't go near it after spending too much time screaming at the TV when they butchered the mythology for Hercules.

Still. ::boggles:: That happened in the show???

Date: 2012-04-20 02:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cailamaia.livejournal.com
Oh the show butchered mythology like crazy, but it was also entertaining as hell, at least for the first five or so seasons, until they ran out of plot to film and started making up shit wholesale.

Date: 2012-04-20 03:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mel-redcap.livejournal.com
It was indeed not rhetorical! XD In one episode Gabrielle was sold a 'breast dagger' at a fair/market, a hidden dagger supposed to fit into the cleavage, only when she tried to hide it down her (nonexistent at the time) cleavage it fell out of the bottom of her tunic and Xena tucked it in hers. Later on Xena got out of being tied up by taking a deep breath, straining a bit, firing the dagger up several feet and catching it to cut herself loose. :)

Sounds about right. Didn't they reuse that mechanic again later sometime, I think?

Date: 2012-04-20 04:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mel-redcap.livejournal.com
...Possibly, but I may not have seen that ep - my viewing history was a tad spotty and stopped after a couple of seasons. :P

Mine track record isn't much better. And it's been about a decade since I last watched any of the series. Maybe it's time to find some episodes and relive middle school. o.0;

.....ok, I dislike reading things before I can finish them, but Chapter two? In the teaser preview?

Admitting the silly ikkle skirts aren't good for riding horses (Holy CARP someone must've sat down and TALKED to the man, because he walked it back as far as he could, given how strongly he set his position before)? Ok, he gets some points back.

And grommit, you might want to peek at chapter two, depending on your preferences for previews.

....I'm more on the squeeing and hopefully bouncing around side of things now.

Hee, fair enough! The first two books (co-incidentally, the two free ones online!) are a worthwhile read, for what it's worth. In copious spare time. :-/

Hah! What free time? Most of the little I have goes to satisfying my writing muses. (Case in point, right now. End of a not-so-fun day and all they want is to romp between the sheets -_-;; )

From: [identity profile] dogmatix-san.livejournal.com
Haha, yeah, I've been kind of iffy about this one too, for that exact reason. I think it was all the worse because he's usually a much better storyteller.

DoJ definitely cannon for me - it's how I got into David Weber's stuff in the first place.

...so I entirely blame Mel for my Safehold series addiction =P

Date: 2012-04-21 01:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mel-redcap.livejournal.com
And I cheerfully accept said blame! :D I have to do something to get you back for all the dang plotbunnies, after all... :P :3
